Effective Self Management For Asthma

Knowing that you have an asthma may become a disheartening event in one's life, especially on the part of those parents whose children have been diagnosed to have one. This may entail an additional worry and burden on their part because of the fear that any moment, their children might develop asthma flare ups. Plus, the tension they feel towards managing the attack themselves.

However devastating it may seem, asthma can be managed effectively and efficiently. The goals of managing asthma effectively is aimed towards maintaining good control of the disease, which entails less to no appearance and experience of signs and symptoms, lesser occurrences of asthma flare ups and diminish the need for bronchodilators or inhalers.

Desensitization

In this process, the person's room or house is freed from all triggers such as plants, animals, dusts, mites and others which are potentially harmful. Avoiding areas where many smokers frequent is also a good way of preventing asthma attack. If you are a smoker, it is best to quit and if someone in your house smokes, better encourage him or her to halt smoking for the benefit of both parties.

Medications

The most common form of management is through medications. Here are some of the most widely used anti-asthma drugs:

Reliever Drugs- As we all know, there are two general classifications of asthma, one is called steady state asthma and the other is called acute exacerbation. Reliever drugs are the medications used for acute exacerbations of asthma (what we usually call asthma attacks). It is during this attacks that chest tightness, shortness of breath and wheezes manifest.

These reliever drugs relax the airway and cause them to dilate allowing air to enter freely. These drugs may come in form of sprays, syrups of tablets.

Preventer Medications- preventer medications, as the term suggests prevents the occurrence of acute asthma exacerbations. These drugs work as anti-inflammatory drugs which have low steroid content.

Exercise

Exercise is very crucial in self management of asthma because it helps strengthen the respiratory system. Aside from that, it also improves our physique. It should be noted, however, that over exercising can trigger asthma. That's why, people with asthma should take one step at a time especially when exercising to avoid exercise induced asthma.

Asthma Treatment Plan

Attacks may happen all the time, in any place. It is best to make a self treatment plan and inform your relatives, workmates or colleagues about your problem. You may educate them on what to do in case you suffer an asthma attack.

If you have asthma, it doesn't mean that you won't be able to do the things a person without asthma can accomplish. You can do it, too. All you need to do is to properly comply with your treatment regimen and soon, you can adopt and keep up. Don't let it hinder you from doing things you want- take it as a challenge and adjust to it.
